“Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.”

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach designed to address and heal trauma by focusing on the physical sensations and biological responses associated with the traumatic experience. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE recognizes that trauma is not just psychological but manifests first in the body. The method involves gently guiding individuals to explore and release stored trauma and survival states through heightened awareness of physiological sensations. Unlike traditional talk therapies, SE emphasises the importance of renegotiating the body’s fight, flight, or freeze responses to trauma, allowing for a gradual release of unresolved physical and emotional energy. This holistic approach aims to restore a sense of safety and resilience by empowering individuals to navigate their traumatic experiences with greater self-awareness and regulation.

I’m passionate about helping singers achieve their authentic potential through understanding and working with their nervous systems. I followed this process myself a few years ago – although I’d been singing professionally for over 20 years, I was struggling behind the scenes with depression, performance anxiety and hardest of all, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In my search for help I discovered somatic therapy and soon I was experiencing not only positive shifts in my mental health, but massive changes to my singing and my understanding of the voice – I was singing better than ever, my creative expression was freer and my confidence skyrocketed! I knew how much this could help other singers so I began training, first at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London, then I undertook further psychotherapy and counselling training. Now I’m working towards a diploma in anatomy, physiology & pathology alongside professional-level Practitioner training in Somatic Experiencing.
SOMATIC: adj. relating to the body rather than the mind
I think this beautiful approach can make miracles in people’s lives – it did in mine! I soon realised there was a gap in the market for something specifically aimed at singers. I knew I needed to create a framework to help singers understand somatics so I took what I knew from being in the classical singing industry for so long, and I blended it with key somatic nervous system practices to create my 12-week program, The Somatic Singer. This program will take you through the same process I did, only more streamlined and directed at helping you achieve your career goals by freeing your voice and growing a deep, embodied confidence in the musical gifts you have to offer. And I’m so excited that the singers who are already in the program are seeing major shifts in their mindsets, their connection to their bodies, and real transformation in their singing!
